Some songs beg no explanation. Many songs can only, really, be felt. For me, this is one of them. Video quality be damned, it's still one of the finest tunes. One even the Queen might be proud of.
Thank you to Chris @ the inimitably fantastic Chimera Obscura for inspiring this post. I've included another of my favourites below, just click on the link.
So, a little something you should know is that inside me lives the spirit of a 100 year old (at least) musician. Stop yawning, I'm getting to the good part. I started playing drums when I was 11. I was forced to play the flute for 3 months in the school band before I was allowed to hammer out the beat behind Elvis' Love Me Tender. Three months of tooting the theme song to M*A*S*H was worth it.
I fell in love.
I spent hours at school practicing. People would come in just to watch me. I felt like a queen as long as I could sit on that Pearl throne, close my eyes, and syncopate the crap out of whatever rhythm I could get my hands on. Jazz Waltz, samba, guaguanco, bossa nova (a personal favourite), salsa, rock (Carmine Appice anyone?), disco...As long as I got to John-Bonham-the-f*ck out and work up a sweat behind the kit, I was in heaven.
My high school music teachers told me I was gifted. My timing was deemed 'impeccable' and so I was often referred to as the 'metronome'. I had a great ear too so I learned marimba, vibraphones and tympani (yes, Carmina Burana!).
After high school I went to music school for a year. I doubted myself next to all the other talent that I was unaware existed. My abilities seemed too weak, my personal 'touch' too pale next to those of others. I was also the only female and was often overlooked as a 'real' musician. My lack of confidence only exacerbated this perspective. What's a girl to do? I took up socializing and the attendant college monkeyshining that eventually leads to...Disillusionment mostly.
If I could turn back time. Cue Cher, and a tear.
I learned alot then and I continue to learn but, damn if I don't want to just stand up and cheer when I watch what you are about to...
That's right, you came all this way and I'm not going to leave you disappointed...
Check it.
